Did you have a root canal but are now experiencing tooth sensitivity, a discolored tooth, or a bump on the gums? These could be signs of complications that need attention. At Endodontic Associates of East Alabama, we may recommend endodontic retreatment.

This procedure is different from your initial root canal because it addresses issues that weren't resolved the first time or that developed later, such as a lingering tooth infection. Rest assured that our skilled team has extensive experience in performing endodontic retreatments to help save your natural tooth and restore your oral health.

If you think you may benefit from retreatment, call now for a consultation in Auburn, AL. We can discuss your options and create a personalized plan to address your needs.

What is endodontic retreatment?

Endodontic retreatment is a follow-up procedure that is done on a tooth that has undergone a root canal because it failed to heal properly or developed new problems. This can happen for several reasons, such as narrow or curved canals that were difficult to treat the first time, or new decay that exposes the root canal filling to bacteria.

During retreatment, we carefully reopen the tooth, remove the original filling material, clean out the infection or debris, and then reseal the canals. The goal is to restore health to the tooth and prevent future infection.

Do I need endodontic retreatment?

You may need retreatment if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Tooth sensitivity that lingers, especially to hot or cold
  • A discolored tooth that looks darker than others
  • A small bump on the gums that may come and go
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Signs of a new or ongoing tooth infection

These are not symptoms to ignore. If you're experiencing these issues in Auburn, AL, our specialists at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama can assess the situation and determine if retreatment is the ideal course of action.

Does endodontic retreatment hurt?

Endodontic retreatment is generally no more painful than your initial root canal procedure. This is because we perform the procedure with modern techniques and advanced technology. Additionally, we use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout treatment. Some mild sensitivity or soreness afterward is normal, but it can be managed with simple over-the-counter drugs. Endodontic Associates of East Alabama can provide clear aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.

How successful is endodontic retreatment?

Endodontic retreatment is highly successful when performed by experienced specialists. Of course, the success rate depends on the specific condition of your tooth and whether you follow all post-operative instructions. At Endodontic Associates of East Alabama, our team has the expertise and tools to ensure the highest likelihood of success. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, a retreated tooth can last for many years or even a lifetime.

Great "bedside manner" - Dr. Looney was professional, kind and attentive. He listened so carefully that he addressed questions that I hadn't actually asked, but he intuitively knew I wanted answers to. He read my forms and asked questions about my prior career, showing interest. He was kind, proactive and made sure I left my appointment with everything I needed. The procedure was done efficiently with as little discimfort as possible. I strongly recommend Dr. Looney if you want a quality and caring experience. I drove 220 miles round trip and it was well worth it!

Dr. Looney took great care with this very anxious patient. I would definitely see him again.

This doctor is very caring. He went above and beyond to get my pain under control. I had one root canal and continued to have pain. He saw me (without a scheduled appointment) and did another root canal on a tooth next to the first infected one. I am praying this will resolve the issues but if not, it is certainly not a reflection on Dr. Looney. He has thorough, quick and most of all, compassionate. The office personnel were great as well.

My dentist did a root canal about 20 years ago and for some reason it went bad and he recommended that I see a specialist because of the difficulty of redoing one. I choose Dr. Looney from my dentist's recommendation and because his practice accepted my Southland Dental Insurance. The Dr. and his assistants did a great job, my root canal went fine, and my insurance covered the entire amount due, I was even refunded the co-pay. I hope I never need another one, but if I do I will see Dr Looney.
