Perforation Repair in Auburn, AL

Perforation repair is an endodontic treatment that is performed to fix a hole in the tooth, which can develop as a result of dental trauma or past treatments. This procedure may go by different names, depending on where the hole is. For example, root perforation repair aims to address damage in the tooth root, while crown repair focuses on the visible portion. At Endodontic Associates of East Alabama, Dr. William Looney specializes in perforation repair and other advanced endodontic procedures, helping our patients in and around Auburn, AL enjoy the benefits of a healthier smile. Our team works closely with patients to help them make the most informed decisions about their oral health. Contact our practice today to schedule a consultation and learn if perforation repair is the best solution for preserving your smile.

Before starting your perforation repair, Dr. Looney or another member of our team will inject the area with a local anesthetic to help you keep comfortable during the procedure. The exact approach to your treatment will depend on where the perforation is. For root perforation repair, he will drill through the enamel to access the pulp chamber, which will be cleaned and disinfected before sealing it and closing the perforation. Crown perforation repair involves removing the crown or filling to access the hole before closing it. No matter the approach, our main goal is to remove any existing decay while preventing further damage.

What Can I Expect After Perforation Repair?

After perforation repair at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama in Auburn, AL, our team focuses on helping you feel informed and comfortable as your tooth begins the recovery process. It’s normal to experience mild tenderness or sensitivity around the treated area for a few days, especially when chewing, and this can usually be managed with recommended over-the-counter medication and by avoiding hard or sticky foods temporarily. Because perforation repair is designed to seal and protect the inner structure of your tooth, a final restoration such as a crown may be needed to provide long-term strength and stability. Most patients are able to return to their usual routine quickly, with the peace of mind that their natural tooth has been preserved and carefully treated by our experienced endodontic team.

Perforation repair can significantly extend the life of your tooth, preventing the spread of infection and providing additional strength where it's needed most. The key benefits of perforation repair include:

  • Allowing you to eat without discomfort
  • Stoping dental infection from spreading into the tooth
  • Minimizing your risk of oral health problems and invasive treatments in the future
  • Provides a minimally invasive solution for a damaged tooth

Am I A Candidate For Perforation Repair?

You may be a candidate for perforation repair if you have a hole in your tooth caused by dental trauma, an aggressive cavity, or complications from previous dental work like a root canal. This procedure is often recommended to save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction due to infection or further damage. Dr. Looney will assess your specific situation, including the size and location of the perforation, to determine if perforation repair is the most suitable course of action for you. Our goal is always to preserve your natural tooth structure and restore oral health.

Great "bedside manner" - Dr. Looney was professional, kind and attentive. He listened so carefully that he addressed questions that I hadn't actually asked, but he intuitively knew I wanted answers to. He read my forms and asked questions about my prior career, showing interest. He was kind, proactive and made sure I left my appointment with everything I needed. The procedure was done efficiently with as little discimfort as possible. I strongly recommend Dr. Looney if you want a quality and caring experience. I drove 220 miles round trip and it was well worth it!

This doctor is very caring. He went above and beyond to get my pain under control. I had one root canal and continued to have pain. He saw me (without a scheduled appointment) and did another root canal on a tooth next to the first infected one. I am praying this will resolve the issues but if not, it is certainly not a reflection on Dr. Looney. He has thorough, quick and most of all, compassionate. The office personnel were great as well.

My dentist did a root canal about 20 years ago and for some reason it went bad and he recommended that I see a specialist because of the difficulty of redoing one. I choose Dr. Looney from my dentist's recommendation and because his practice accepted my Southland Dental Insurance. The Dr. and his assistants did a great job, my root canal went fine, and my insurance covered the entire amount due, I was even refunded the co-pay. I hope I never need another one, but if I do I will see Dr Looney.

Is a perforated tooth a dental emergency?

While not always an emergency, prompt treatment is important to prevent infection, bone loss, or tooth loss. Delaying repair can complicate the situation.

Can a perforated tooth be saved?

Yes, many perforated teeth can be repaired with proper treatment, especially if addressed early. The location and size of the perforation influence the prognosis.

What happens if a perforation is not treated?

An untreated perforation can lead to chronic infection, bone loss, and eventual tooth loss. Prompt treatment greatly improves the prognosis.

Why is prompt treatment important for a tooth perforation?

Delaying treatment can increase the risk of bacterial contamination, infection, and additional damage to the tooth and surrounding structures. Addressing a tooth perforation early often provides the best opportunity to preserve the natural tooth and maintain oral function.

Can perforation repair be performed on a previously treated tooth?

Perforation repair may be recommended for teeth that have undergone previous endodontic treatment if a perforation is discovered. A thorough evaluation helps determine whether the tooth is a candidate for repair and continued preservation.

How long does perforation repair take?

The length of treatment depends on the location and complexity of the perforation, as well as the condition of the surrounding tooth structure. During your consultation, our team can provide a more accurate estimate based on your individual needs and treatment plan.

If you've experienced a dental injury or are having complications after a root canal, perforation repair may be needed to restore your tooth to its full function and prevent potentially harmful decay.
