What Is Dental Post Removal?
A dental post is a small, supportive rod placed inside a tooth's canal after a root canal to provide stability, especially when the tooth is damaged or has significant decay. If this post becomes loose or the tooth becomes reinfected, it may need to be removed. With over 30 years of experience in endodontics, Dr. William Looney at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama has helped many patients restore the function and appearance of their teeth with compassionate care. If you're dealing with pain, infection, or a loose crown after a root canal, contact our team in Auburn, AL to learn more about post removal.
How Do You Perform Dental Post Removal?
Before starting the procedure, our team will perform a detailed examination to assess your tooth's condition. We may take 3D scans of your mouth and jaw using our practice's cone-beam CT scanner for more precise treatment planning. To ensure your comfort, we'll numb the area with a local anesthetic. Dr. Looney will carefully access the post, using small incisions or a drill, and remove it with specialized instruments. After the post is extracted, we will address any infection and may place a filler or crown to reinforce the tooth before sealing it.
What Can I Expect After Post Removal?
After post removal, it is normal to experience mild tenderness around the treated tooth and surrounding gum tissue as the area begins its recovery process. Our team at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama in Auburn, AL performs post removal with precision and care, and most patients find that any discomfort is manageable and temporary. You may notice slight sensitivity when biting or chewing for a few days, especially if the tooth had previous inflammation or infection. Over-the-counter pain relief is often sufficient, and we will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your situation. Keeping the area clean, avoiding chewing directly on the treated tooth until your general dentist places a new restoration, and attending any recommended follow-up appointments are important next steps. If swelling, prolonged discomfort, or unusual symptoms occur, our team is available to evaluate the area and ensure everything is progressing as expected.

Am I A Candidate For Post Removal?
A candidate for post removal is typically someone experiencing pain, infection, or instability in a tooth following a root canal procedure. Common signs include discomfort, swelling, or a loose crown, which may indicate a broken post or reinfection. During a comprehensive consultation, Dr. Looney will carefully assess your condition, discuss your concerns, and create a personalized treatment plan to restore the health and function of the tooth.
Endodontic Associates of East Alabama Reviews
Great "bedside manner" - Dr. Looney was professional, kind and attentive. He listened so carefully that he addressed questions that I hadn't actually asked, but he intuitively knew I wanted answers to. He read my forms and asked questions about my prior career, showing interest. He was kind, proactive and made sure I left my appointment with everything I needed. The procedure was done efficiently with as little discimfort as possible. I strongly recommend Dr. Looney if you want a quality and caring experience. I drove 220 miles round trip and it was well worth it!
Dr W. Looney DMD is very professional & courteous. He did great correcting my dental issues. Best pain free surgery I have had in 59 years. Staff is great as well.
Dr. Looney took great care with this very anxious patient. I would definitely see him again.
This doctor is very caring. He went above and beyond to get my pain under control. I had one root canal and continued to have pain. He saw me (without a scheduled appointment) and did another root canal on a tooth next to the first infected one. I am praying this will resolve the issues but if not, it is certainly not a reflection on Dr. Looney. He has thorough, quick and most of all, compassionate. The office personnel were great as well.
My dentist did a root canal about 20 years ago and for some reason it went bad and he recommended that I see a specialist because of the difficulty of redoing one. I choose Dr. Looney from my dentist's recommendation and because his practice accepted my Southland Dental Insurance. The Dr. and his assistants did a great job, my root canal went fine, and my insurance covered the entire amount due, I was even refunded the co-pay. I hope I never need another one, but if I do I will see Dr Looney.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I need a dental post removed after a root canal?
A dental post may need to be removed if it becomes loose, if there’s a new infection under the crown, or if a retreatment or repair of the root canal is necessary. Sometimes posts also need to be removed if they were improperly placed or if they’re blocking access to treat a hidden infection or a fracture deep within the tooth. Removing the post allows our endodontists to properly clean, disinfect, and restore the tooth to preserve it as long as possible.
Is post removal more complicated than a standard root canal retreatment?
Post removal can be more technically challenging because the post is anchored inside the narrow canal of the tooth. Over time, it can bond tightly to the surrounding dentin, making removal delicate work. However, our endodontists are experienced in the complexities of post removal and use specialized tools and techniques, sometimes under a microscope, to carefully loosen and extract the post without damaging the remaining healthy tooth structure. Advanced imaging, like CBCT scans, helps plan the safest approach for each case.
What happens after a dental post is removed?
After the post is removed, we will treat any infection or remaining issues inside the canal. The tooth is then refilled and reinforced, and in many cases, a new post or core build-up and crown may be needed to restore the tooth’s strength and function. Finally, we'll make any necessary adjustments to make sure the final restoration protects your tooth and fits comfortably with your bite.
Is post removal painful during treatment?
Patient comfort is a priority during endodontic procedures, and local anesthesia is typically used to help minimize discomfort. Most patients report feeling pressure rather than pain during the post removal process.
How long does a post removal procedure take?
Treatment time varies depending on the type of dental post, the condition of the tooth, and the complexity of the case. During your consultation, our team can provide a more accurate estimate based on your individual treatment plan.
What questions should I ask during my consultation?
Before treatment, patients may want to ask about the condition of the tooth, the need for root canal retreatment, expected treatment steps, and recovery considerations. Understanding the process can help you feel more confident about your endodontic treatment plan.
