Cone-Beam Computed Tomography in Auburn, AL

Cone-beam computed tomography (cone-beam CT or CBCT) is a state-of-the-art technology that takes detailed, three-dimensional images of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Unlike traditional x-rays, which provide a flat image, cone-beam CT dental imaging offers a more complete picture, helping us to identify problems more clearly. Dr. William Looney and our team at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama use this advanced tool to thoroughly assess your oral health, pinpoint issues, and plan treatments with greater accuracy. By using CBCT dental images, we can provide more precise care and help speed up your recovery. To learn more about how our team uses the latest technologies to improve your treatment, contact our Auburn, AL endodontic practice and schedule a consultation.

During your cone-beam CT scan, you'll either sit or stand as the scanner gently moves around your head, capturing detailed 3D images of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding tissues. CBCT dental images give a clear view of your bone structure, tooth roots, and alignment, helping to identify any issues like infections, fractures, or abnormalities that might not be visible with traditional X-rays. Once the scan is complete, Dr. Looney will review the images with you and discuss the best treatment options moving forward.

Having a thorough understanding of your oral health is essential for maintaining a healthy and functional smile. Cone-beam CT dental imaging offers a comprehensive view that traditional imaging may not capture, allowing our team to personalize your treatment, delivering benefits that include:

  • Decreased pain during diagnosis and planning
  • Quicker, more streamlined procedures
  • Greater accuracy for consistently better outcomes
  • Fewer return visits or extra imaging sessions
  • A more convenient, patient-focused experience

Am I A Candidate For Cone-Beam CT Scans?

Cone-beam CT scans are ideal for patients who require a more detailed look at their oral health. This advanced imaging technology is commonly used for individuals needing root canal therapy, dental implants, or treatment for more complex issues. It's also helpful for diagnosing infections, fractures, or other hidden problems that traditional X-rays might miss. If you’re experiencing persistent discomfort, preparing for a surgical procedure, or need a more in-depth evaluation of your dental health, Dr. Looney can determine if a cone-beam CT scan is the right way to move forward.

Great "bedside manner" - Dr. Looney was professional, kind and attentive. He listened so carefully that he addressed questions that I hadn't actually asked, but he intuitively knew I wanted answers to. He read my forms and asked questions about my prior career, showing interest. He was kind, proactive and made sure I left my appointment with everything I needed. The procedure was done efficiently with as little discimfort as possible. I strongly recommend Dr. Looney if you want a quality and caring experience. I drove 220 miles round trip and it was well worth it!

Dr. Looney took great care with this very anxious patient. I would definitely see him again.

This doctor is very caring. He went above and beyond to get my pain under control. I had one root canal and continued to have pain. He saw me (without a scheduled appointment) and did another root canal on a tooth next to the first infected one. I am praying this will resolve the issues but if not, it is certainly not a reflection on Dr. Looney. He has thorough, quick and most of all, compassionate. The office personnel were great as well.

My dentist did a root canal about 20 years ago and for some reason it went bad and he recommended that I see a specialist because of the difficulty of redoing one. I choose Dr. Looney from my dentist's recommendation and because his practice accepted my Southland Dental Insurance. The Dr. and his assistants did a great job, my root canal went fine, and my insurance covered the entire amount due, I was even refunded the co-pay. I hope I never need another one, but if I do I will see Dr Looney.

Does Insurance Cover Cone-Beam Computed Tomography?

Many dental insurance plans cover cone-beam CT scans, especially when they are medically necessary for diagnosing or treating a specific condition. However, coverage can vary depending on your provider and plan. Our team at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama will help you verify your insurance benefits and provide a cost estimate before your scan. We are committed to helping you understand your financial options so you can receive the care you need without any surprises.

How does CBCT differ from regular dental x-rays?

Traditional x-rays provide 2D images, while CBCT captures 3D images for more complete views. CBCT reveals details like bone thickness, root position, and nerve pathways that regular x-rays can miss. This leads to more accurate and efficient dental care.

What can CBCT detect that regular x-rays can’t?

CBCT can reveal hidden root canals, impacted teeth, bone loss, tumors, cysts, and even airway obstructions. It’s especially helpful in identifying the exact location of nerves and sinuses. These details are crucial for safe and effective treatment.

Are there any side effects from a CBCT scan?

CBCT is very safe and generally has no side effects. There’s no pain, and no injections or dyes are involved. The minimal radiation exposure is carefully controlled.

Is a CBCT scan safe?

CBCT scans use a low level of radiation and are designed to capture detailed images efficiently. The radiation exposure is typically higher than standard dental X-rays but significantly lower than medical CT scans. CBCT imaging is recommended only when clinically necessary.

How long does a CBCT scan take?

Most CBCT scans take less than one minute to complete. The entire appointment is usually brief, and patients can return to normal activities immediately after the scan.

Do I need to prepare for a CBCT scan?

In most cases, no special preparation is required. Patients may be asked to remove metal objects such as glasses, jewelry, or removable dental appliances to ensure clear imaging results.
